Failure defines failure as:

1. an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success
2. nonperformance of something due, required, or expected
3. a subnormal quantity or quality; an insufficiency
4. deterioration or decay, especially of vigor, strength, etc.
5. a condition of being bankrupt by reason of insolvency
6. a becoming insolvent or bankrupt
7. a person or thing that proves unsuccessful

Are you afraid of failure? I live in America and my observation is that we have made failure a taboo word. We all want to be successful and deliver on time what is expected. Who wants to face their co-worker, boss, family or friends and admit they have failed?

Unfortunately I see this leading to a rather problematic conundrum. If we only attempt things we feel comfortable that we will not fail to accomplish, the odds are that innovation will slow or cease entirely. Trial and error is the guiding principle in creation and discovery. If we, as a society have become so afraid of failure, and are teaching that fear to the next generation, then we, as a society, will stagnate.

I encourage each of us to take a chance on failure. Try something you aren’t sure of, fail [or don’t], and see what you learn along the way. The denotation of failure isn’t ‘bad’, ‘evil’, or ‘wrong’, let’s change to connotation as well.
